MY THOUGHTS :)

Mobile Suit Gundam / Summary Movies

9/10

My entry point to Gundam entirely, and even though I was almost convinced I’d have to “power through” this one, that was not at all the case. Strong main cast of characters, I think everyone has their moments. What really captivated me was their antagonists, and NO not just Char Aznable, but he definitely was one of them.

I think what really sold me was the way that even though we have very clear cut protagonists and antagonists, they really want to humanize the people on the opposing side, as well as show the own corruption of the protagonist’s side. It's a story about war that makes it clear there are no “good guys” in this war, just a lesser of two evils, and even then that lesser is still pretty damn evil.

The series sets the tone incredibly well for future installations as both a show about war and politics, but more importantly the relationships held by characters and how war shapes and effects them. The ending especially is genuinely one of the best things I’ve ever seen, I’m never not thinking about the last part of this series. The biggest problem is probably the pacing (an unfortunate trend for a lot of Gundam media) but I don't care because the good more than makes up for the bad.

Amazing series, I will not accept any 0079 hate under my roof.

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam

9/10

This is how you make a sequel series to a show that was already amazing. A great continuation of both politics and characters after the One Year War, where we get to see the Earth Federation take a more antagonistic role this time (as well as Char being a protagonist!)

I cannot write my thoughts on Zeta without saying this: I LOVE KAMILLE BIDAN!!! One of it not my favorite Gundam protagonists ever. No one suffered more than my best friend Kamille Bidan. I think this show does a great job with its protagonists in general, as well with the reoccuring characters from MSG.

One complaint I did have was that unlike 0079 Zeta lacks many strong villain characters, and it has the Gundam Classic of being weirdly paced. I don't think it's as bad as some people say, especially when more central plot lines and characters are as strong as they are. But overall, I LOVE Zeta with all my heart it will forever be one of my favorite Gundams.

Char's Counterattack

10/10

Does CCA deserve a perfect score? No. But I'm giving it one anyway.

More than anything this movie just makes me really sad. I love divorce. I hear "AURORA" on the soundtrack and I'm absolutely going to burst into tears. I wish a lot more time was actually focused on Char and Amuro and their relationship over Quess, but despite CCA's sometimes glaring flaws, I cannot bring myself to care. This film is so visually and narratively beautiful that I really can't get too mad about its issues.

So why a perfect score then? I've seen this movie the most out of any Gundam media and I know it has flaws but I still think it's perfect. I think Amuro and Char are such good characters with such a good dynamic and such a sad finale to their already depressing stories that I just want to scream whenever I think about this movie. I love these two, both as characters and as what they represent. Despite its flaws, Counterattack is an important movie that I hold near and dear to my heart.

Also what was going on in that scene in the field-

Hathaway

7/10

I honestly just love how little of the movie is dedicated to action and fighting. As someone who was not crazy invested in Hathaway's part in CCA, I LOVED seeing Hathaway here. Genuinely seeing him in this one movie made me way more invested in his character than I ever thought I would be. This movie also contains one of my favorite type of scenes where we follow how it feels to be characters on the ground during a mobile suit fight.

Weirdly I would say my biggest issue is the lighting? A lot of the night scenes are so damn hard to see at points, which makes me sad because of how good this movie looks when it isn’t nighttime. The ending fight (which is one of the few action sequences in this movie btw) is so hard to follow and make out at points, which sucks because I really love the parts I can.

Overall though, amazing movie with great character work and an interesting continuation of UC politics, I NEED THE SECOND MOVIE NOW!!

The Witch From Mercury

8/10

Cucuruz Doan's Island

5/10

GET THOSE SCARY ASS BLUE EYES OFF OF AMURO RAY!!!

Why do people complain about this movie not being beginner-friendly, half the Gundam movies are not beginner-friendly. Explain what any of Hathaway or CCA means without context. But anyways, I liked it fine, though admittedly it was a strange choice to make an entire movie out of one episode. Like, even if it was a really good episode, that’s 20 minutes that needs to get turned into 110 minutes which doesn't really work.

It's alright.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin

6/10

My friend and I have a joke that this is the Gundam series where Char portrays himself as the Chad and everyone else as the wojack in a Neo-Zeon propaganda film. I enjoy this interpretation of Origin over anything else, it is not canon to me. Something about the way Char acts is so corny and edgy sometimes, and some of the shit like “Oh Char Aznable was actually a boy I knew who looked exactly like me but had brown eyes instead of blue so I stole his identity and wore sunglasses for years” was so insane that I kind of love it.

Weirdly the characters that Origin benefits the most is like, every other character BUT Char. I love every gay as hell scene with Garma, Sayla gets some good moments, any Dren content I will graciously accept, and Ramba Ral and Crowley are my favorites forever. Though this series does help contribute to the truth that Char is a horsegirl.

ALSO STOP DRAWING AMURO WITH THOSE SCARY BLUE EYES!!!

0083 Stardust Memory

4/10

I wanted to like 0083 so bad, the animation and character/mech design and music were all so good but it really just failed to deliver on the writing. I’ve seen some people say people don't like 0083 because the characters are unlikable and do stupid things, and I can't really agree because having characters like that doesn't immediately make them bad, it's just the fact these characters are not interesting. I do not care at all about either the protagonists or the antagonists. I like Cima, but the most interesting parts of Cima’s deal aren't even mentioned within the anime. The main character was kind of bland, most relationship development happens completely off screen, and it never really feels like any of these characters go through any arc or change.

Also, I really hate the way this show tries to give the origin of the Titans, it’s legitimately so unnecessary and not even that interesting. Overall it's just kind of a collection of things that would be cool to see in a better executed way.

Gundam vs Hello Kitty

10/10

I don’t like handing out perfect scores. For me, a piece of media truly has to captivate me like no other media can to earn that score for it to feel justified. Gundam vs Hello Kitty is that media. It is such a bizarre mini-series that it’s honestly kind of perfect. There is nothing to be done to make this any better, it is already perfect media.

No exaggeration, I tell everyone I meet about this. I think it’s a beautiful work of art that must be shared with all of the world.

Turn A Gundam

8/10

I do not know how to approach this one yet, just know I love Turn A.

G Gundam

10/10

Actually legitimately made me sit up on multiple occasions. There were more than one scenes where my mouth was agape. I started this expecting something goofy but G Gundam is actually insane. Insanely good.

I know I said I don't like giving out perfect ratings, but when I say nothing could prepare me for how good G Gundam was, I mean it. I thought it was going to be a light kinda corny 90s super robot anime, but GOD WAS I WRONG. This might genuinely be one of the best Gundam series. Even when you think something is going to be easy to predict, it comes out with something so insane you just have to get into it. This show is never boring, and I love it for that.

The ending battle of the original MSG will always be one of my favorite moments in Gundam forever, but G Gundam's final battle genuinely might rival it. I was up at 6 AM sobbing over the power of friendship and love. Might be one of the best finales in anything ever, I do not care. Everyone should watch G Gundam NOW!!!

I could be here forever if I wanted to list every reason why I love G Gundam, so here's the TL;DR- I think anything that can make a character called "Master Asia" who wants to "conquer the North, East, South, West and Center" to become "Super Asia" into an incredibly compelling character with an impactful death scene is worthy of a perfect rating.
